One of the biggest misconceptions about fitness—especially in a CrossFit gym—is that you need to be in peak shape before you start. The truth? Every workout can and should be adjusted to your individual fitness level. That’s where scaling (or modifying) comes in.
At Delaware Fit Factory, we emphasize customization over comparison. Scaling workouts ensures that every member, regardless of experience or ability, gets the best workout possible without risking injury or feeling overwhelmed. Let’s break down what scaling is, why it matters, and how it can help you make real progress toward your goals.
Scaling means adjusting a workout’s movements, weights, intensity, or volume to match an athlete’s current fitness level. It allows you to maintain the intended stimulus (purpose, goal, or outcome) of a workout while working at a level that is safe and effective for you.
For example, if a workout includes pull-ups, but you don’t yet have strict pull-ups, we might scale by having you do:
✔️ Ring rows to build pulling strength
✔️ Jumping pull-ups for explosiveness
✔️ Banded pull-ups for assistance
This keeps the workout challenging but doable, allowing you to build strength and technique without frustration or injury.
One of the biggest mistakes athletes make is trying to lift too heavy, move too fast, or do advanced movements before they’re ready. Over time, this can lead to overuse injuries, poor movement patterns, and setbacks.
Scaling allows you to:
✅ Move with proper form and control
✅ Strengthen muscles and joints before progressing
✅ Keep training consistent and injury-free
At Delaware Fit Factory, we’d rather see you modify a workout today and train again tomorrow than push too hard and have to sit out for weeks due to injury.
Every workout is designed with a purpose—whether it’s building endurance, strength, power, or speed. If a workout calls for high reps at a fast pace, but you’re struggling to lift a prescribed weight, you may lose the intended conditioning effect.
Scaling helps you keep up the intensity while working at your appropriate level.
🔹 Example Workout:
“21-15-9” of Deadlifts (225/155 lbs) & Handstand Push-Ups
🔹 Scaled Options:
✔️ Reduce the deadlift weight to keep sets unbroken
✔️ Swap handstand push-ups for box pike push-ups or strict dumbbell presses
✔️ Reduce total reps to 15-12-9
With these modifications, you still get the same strength and conditioning effect without struggling through an inappropriate version of the workout.
Nothing kills motivation faster than feeling defeated by a workout. If you’re constantly struggling to finish WODs as prescribed, it’s easy to get discouraged. Scaling allows you to move efficiently, complete workouts, and feel accomplished.
Progress in the gym isn’t about who lifts the most weight—it’s about showing up, putting in effort, and gradually improving.
🏋️♂️ Imagine this:
• Week 1: You scale push-ups by doing them on a tall box
• Week 4: You’re doing push-ups on a low box
• Week 8: You’re doing strict push-ups
Each step builds on the last, and scaling allows that journey to happen without frustration.
At Delaware Fit Factory, we welcome everyone—from beginners to experienced athletes. But that means no single workout is one-size-fits-all. Scaling allows our coaches to modify workouts so that:
✅ A beginner can focus on technique and basic strength
✅ An intermediate athlete can push their limits safely
✅ A high-level athlete can work at peak intensity
In a class setting, that means everyone trains together, supports each other, but progresses at their own pace.
Scaling is an art and a science, and our coaches are here to help! Here are a few key things to keep in mind:
✅ Talk to your coach – They’ll help you scale properly so you get the best workout possible.
✅ Listen to your body – Some days, you’ll need to dial things back (and that’s okay).
✅ Prioritize technique over intensity – Moving well leads to faster progress than lifting heavier with bad form.
✅ Don’t compare your workout to others – Everyone is at a different stage in their journey.
